Welcome to Marrakech, otherwise known by locals as the “Red City” since its beautiful buildings are made of beaten clay. Marrakech is a vibrant Islamic city that is full of color, spices, exotic sights, modern, yet is faithful to its ancient traditions and heritage.
In this exciting travel guide, I will escort you through the many facets of this beautiful city. This guide will be divided up into multiple articles, since I learned so much during my time there. These articles are:
- Preparing for a Trip to Marrakech – Click Here
- Must See Places in Marrakech – Click Here
- Moroccan Cuisine & Recipes (coming soon!)
As you read this series, there are a few words you will need to add to your personal lexicon:
Dirham – refers to the local currency (MAD) of Morocco
Hammam – refers to a traditional Moroccan bath where you steam and exfoliate
Kaftan – refers to a traditional robe that is worn by women
Medina – refers to the historical & walled portion of the city. Otherwise known as the old city
Riad – refers to traditional houses located in the Medina
Souks – refers to the street markets or bazaar
Tajine – refers to a traditional dome Moroccan cookware that is made of clay or ceramic
Marrakech is an intoxicating city that will “wow” you at every turn. If you are making plans to travel here, do not expect a peaceful and quiet journey. Be prepared for an overload of sensory experiences if you are gravitated to stay in the Medina.
You will find yourself immersed in the sounds of buzzing mopeds and bicycle bells as locals weave throughout traffic and narrow alleyways, the pipe melodies of snake charmers, and the occasional sound of the Adhan that streams from the local mosques five times a day.
The beautiful intricate details of Moroccan architecture will inspire you, the colorful rugs and baskets of spices will entice you, while you inhale the smell of mint mixed with saffron, perfumes, and fresh leather drying on the streets.
As your mind tries to absorb all of the vibrance surrounded by you, your attention will also be drawn to the occasional donkey that slowly strolls through the bustling streets carrying goods, merchants trying to seduce you with their best smile, and mysterious women hidden behind an Islamic veil who never make eye contact with you. From sunrise your senses will find themselves in constant wonder. When the sun sets in the evening, fine dirt will cover every pore of your skin, and you will fall in love with the exuberance of Marrakech.
So sit back, find a comfortable place to relax, grab a cup of mint tea and roam with me through the alluring city of Marrakech.
