This quiet afternoon, my sister and I decided to have some fun and experiment with a Hennessy Margarita recipe for dinner. As we were looking through the cabinet, my sister pulled out a bottle of Hennessy and said “We should make Hennessy margaritas!” I looked at my sister and asked “cognac and tequila in one drink?!”. She exclaimed “YES!” So not only did we have fun creating the best Hennessy Margarita recipe (also known as a Henny Rita!), we decided to film ourselves making this easy margarita recipe as well. This recipe also happens to be one of the most requested drinks at my sister’s job.

Hennessy Margaritas are smooth, bold, and surprisingly well-balanced. The rich, warming notes of Hennessy cognac carry hints of oak, vanilla, and spice. These flavors blend beautifully with the bright tang of lime and the clean finish of a good tequila. The result is a cocktail that’s lush, bright, and refreshing, with a depth of flavor that surprises first-time drinkers. It’s a perfect balance of citrusy margarita zest and the velvety finish Hennessy is known for.

STEP 4: Serve & Garnish: Strain into your prepared glass filled with ice, garnish with a lime wedge, and enjoy!

For cocktail rim, we used Tajin as shown in the photo below. If you’ve never used tajin before, you should give it a try! Tajin has a salty, citrus, and subtle spice taste. It pairs perfectly with sweet flavored drinks. If you do not have any tajin on hand, you can order some using my link below. You could also use salt or sugar to rim your glass as well.

  • Use Fresh Citrus Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice (which make sweet and sour mix) is a game-changer! Homemade sweet and sour mix is way better than store bought.
  • Choose Quality Spirits: Smooth, high-quality tequila will make your margarita taste bar-worthy.
  • Shake with Plenty of Ice: Shake your margarita vigorously for 10–15 seconds. This chills the drink and gives it that crisp, refreshing finish.

Use a quality silver (blanco) tequila or a smoky mezcal for the best flavor pairing with the cognac. I personally enjoy using Patron silver in this recipe.

Yes! You can make a batch (without ice) in advance, refrigerate it, and stir with fresh ice just before serving to keep it chilled and not diluted.

The large batch recipe on this page yields about 12 margaritas, which is perfect for gatherings and hosting!

Traditional salt works great, but Tajín or sugar are fun alternatives that pair beautifully with this flavor profile.

Hennessy adds smooth, rich depth to a margarita with warm notes of oak, vanilla, and subtle spice. It balances the bright citrus and tequila with a slightly sweet, luxurious finish that makes the cocktail taste more elevated and bold.

Yes, tequila and Hennessy go surprisingly well together. Tequila brings bright, earthy agave notes while Hennessy adds smooth warmth and subtle sweetness, creating a balanced, layered flavor that works especially well in cocktails like a Hennyrita or Hennessy Margarita.
