Who wouldn’t want to escape to a bathroom in their own home that is relaxing and spa inspired? To me bedrooms and bathrooms are two rooms that should feel like an escape from the everyday hustle and bustle of life. When you walk into a bathroom that feels cluttered and busy, this can actually be over stimulating for your mind, making it hard for you to drift and relax.
In this post, I want to share 7 décor tips I used to remodel our guest bathroom. When we moved into our new place over a year ago, the colors and texture in the guest bathroom were such a turnoff for me. Instead of feeling annoyed or frustrated, I decided to make the guest bathroom my new pet project. Whenever I embark on decorating a new space, I like to reflect on how I want the room to “feel”. Next I always look for an art piece that inspires me and I decorate from there, using the art as my focal point. Online one day, I found a beautiful geode piece that caught my eye, but it quickly sold out. I still did what any girl would do and saved this dream art to my Pinterest board, hoping I would come across something that would excite me in the same way. During my remodel project, I always referenced the wall art as my inspiration. I wanted the waves within the geode art to carry all the at through to the shower wall.
After months of searching and applying updates, I finally found an artist who was able to make my Pinterest art dream come to life! In fact, her artwork exceeded my expectations! Today I can finally mark my bathroom remodel project as complete! Below are 8 principles I worked by to make my vision come to life. Continue reading to see what these eight decor tips are!
Apply a Fresh Coat of Paint with the Following Colors:
My stepfather is a professional painter by trade for more than 20 years. His favorite brand of paint he recommends to all of his clients is Sherwin Williams. Their paint is a tad bit more expensive than Lowe’s or Home Depot, but it’s well worth the investment. The paint goes on beautifully and it does not require multiple coats. Our bathroom walls only required 2 coats of paint to cover up the terrible baby blue color that existed before. Sherwin Williams’ paint is also very durable. So if you do not like the cost of Sherwin Williams’ paint gallons, just remember, you get what you pay for. When selecting a paint color, I recommend soothing and calming paint colors. These would include: grays, soft beige, or even white! The gray on our bathroom walls is called: SW 7066 Gray Matters. Below is the color swatch family it comes from:
Brighten Your Shower with a Light Color Tile
When we first moved into our new place, I called the previous shower tile the jail cell bathroom. It was small tiles, dark, and laid with grout that was no longer white and hard to keep clean. Earth tone tiles are nice, but lighter color tile is more inviting in my opinion. I am a huge fan of subway tile. So for our shower interior, I thought it would be fun to find a “subway type” tile, but with a twist and with character. I went searching at a local tile store, and I found that any “specialty” tile was very expensive. So I decided to take my search online and I found a website that had amazing prices on beautiful pieces of tile. Their shipping was super fast, and they were able to successfully deliver all of our tile in our high rise building without any damage to the tile cuts. I ordered our wall tile from tilebar.com. The name of our wall tile is called : Billowy Clouds 12×36 Polished Ceramic Wall Tile. The floor tile was ordered locally from a store called The Tile Shop. The name of our floor tile is called: Legno Cobble Limestone.
Replace Color Towels and Rugs with White Ones
Sometimes people shy away from white towels and rugs because they can “show dirt”. But in my opinion, that’s a good thing! I want to know if a towel or rug is dirty! Why use towels that hide dirt? White towels are easy to care for and stay the cleanest in my opinion because they can be washed with bleach. When neatly folded or rolled, they enhance your bathroom’s appearance of feeling clean. If you have a local TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross or HomeGoods, you can find some really good / plush hotel quality towels at a discount price! I also found the exact same towels here on Amazon!
Place Bathroom Products on Floating Shelves
Previously our bathroom didn’t have any storage besides under the bathroom sink cabinet. I think it’s convenient for family or guests to have everything they need in the bathroom. So to give our bathroom a clean yet functional look, I purchased these floating shelves on Amazon. Floating shelves really elevate the modern feel in your bathroom oasis without the need for bulky storage units. These particular shelves were also of interest to me because they have built in push lights. So these also act as a great night light or mood light for your bathroom.
Keep Wall Décor Simple & Sleek
I’m not a huge fan of busy wallpaper, cliché vinyl wall quote decals, or busy wall art. If you’re trying to create a modern and calming atmosphere, less is more. Our new favorite wall art was hand created by Jay9Designs. In fact, this custom-made art design actually inspired the entire look for this bathroom. I love using geode and resin pieces to decorate with, because they take the “canvas” look to a new level while adding texture. The colors selected by Lexi, artist and owner of Jay9Designs, compliment the cool spa effect I was going for. As mentioned earlier, she used grays and whites as the main color palette for this piece. She also used chrome and crystal accents throughout the work. I feel that chrome is another great accent to use when you’re going for a modern feel throughout a space. So all of our bathroom accents are also made of chrome. If you would like to order or consult with Jay9Designs on a custom piece for your space, contact this artist at Jay9designs@gmail.com. Her service is fast, white-glove, and high end without breaking the bank. You can also follow her latest pieces here on Instagram or TikTok.

Store Toiletries in Clear Containers
As I mentioned earlier, light colors such as white work beautifully in modern bathroom styles. So why not display everyday toiletries such as cotton balls, q-tips, sugar scrubs in clear glass jars. Even soap and lotion on your sink look more inviting when placed in a glass or white container. Not only will it make it easy to find these items, but it will also make your bathroom feel clean and organized. I purchased our glass jars here on Amazon.
Place Simple Earthy or Green Elements as Part of Your Décor
There’s something relaxing about bringing the outside in. Especially in your bathroom, a place where you want to relax and unwind. Purchasing little items like small plants, such as grass or fresh flowers like I have in the photo below calm the mind. The jars we placed our toiletries in also have a touch of earthiness by using wooden lids, that match the cabinets. You can purchase similar grass vases like I have shown below off of Amazon. The original ones I purchased are no longer sold, but these are pretty close!
Upgrade Your Shower Head
One last item I wanted to throw in that I failed to mention was also replacing the shower head! With a small investment of around $25, you can seriously upgrade your shower game. I prefer installing rain shower heads since they release more water and can cover a wider range on your body for a relaxing shower experience. The one we installed in our shower was very easy to install, it did not require any special tape, and we have not had any leaking issues since we purchased. The shower head we purchased was less than $30 dollars located here on Amazon.
I hope you found these 8 tips useful and helpful! If you’re looking to redo your bathroom to have a more modern and spa feel, my single piece of advice would be that less is more. If you have any other tips, please let me know in the comments below. I would love to hear from you!
