Napa Valley is renowned worldwide for its beauty, prestigious wine portfolio, and its many food/wine festivals. Located in the heart of California in the United States, it’s the perfect destination to plan a romantic getaway, girls trip, friends trip, or couples getaway. In this article, I will share my Napa Valley travel guide and some helpful planning ideas to make the most of your future trip.
Wine and friends are a great blend.
Best Time to Visit Napa Valley:
If you’re flying into Napa Valley, you can fly into one of the following four airports:
- SFO – San Francisco International Airport (around 1 hour & 20 minutes from Napa)
- OAK – Oakland International Airport (around 1 hour & 15 minutes from Napa)
- SMF – Sacramento International Airport (around 1 hour & 15 minutes from Napa)
- STS – Sonoma County Airport (around 45 minutes from Napa)
Due to the rural nature of Napa and the distance between vineyards, I recommend renting a car and visiting Napa Valley in either the spring or fall.
- Spring (March to May): If you visit Napa during the spring season, you will enjoy mild and comfortable weather, beautiful floral blooms and fewer crowds.
- Summer (June to August): Should you decide to visit Napa Valley during the summer months, be prepared for warmer days, beautiful scenes of full-grown grapes on vines, and more festivals heading into August. August through October months are considered harvest season in wine country.
- Fall (September to November): For my food and wine festival lovers, early fall season is your time to visit Napa Valley. This is the most crowded time of year, so expect higher prices and book well in advance. However, early fall will allow you to participate in various harvest season activities throughout the Valley.
- Winter (December to February): If you’re seeking a cozy, peaceful, cool weather wine experience, then I recommend visiting Napa Valley in the winter. Average temperatures are around mid-50s to low 60s Fahrenheit (around 12-17°C) with lows dropping into the 40s (around 4-9°C). This is also the perfect time to explore Napa’s many spas and wellness retreats as well.
Where to Stay:
If you plan to visit Napa Valley, I recommend booking a charming boutique hotel or a vacation rental through a platform like Airbnb. There are many miniature towns that make up Napa Valley as a whole, here is a brief description of each:
- American Canyon – This is the southern most town in Napa Valley, but is traditionally not considered part of wine country due to the lack of vineyards in this location. However, it is a nice destination for close proximity to Napa, parks, and hiking.
- Napa / Downtown Napa – This is the largest area and the heart of Napa Valley. Napa’s downtown area is very vibrant, with multiple charming boutique shopping areas, restaurants, and the famous Napa Valley Wine train.
- Yountville – This tiny town is in the heart of Napa Valley, and is known for its luxury accommodations and many Michelin-starred restaurants. You can also enjoy hot air balloon rides in this area, spas, and art collections. Some famous wineries or vineyards in this area are: Domaine Chandon, Stags’ Leap Winery, and Opus One Winery.
- St. Helena – Is also located in the heart of Napa. St. Helena has a charming downtown, art galleries, and well-known wine brands such as: Beringer, Duckhorn, and Joseph Phelps. St. Helena is also home to Napa Valley’s oldest winery – Charles Krug.
- Calistoga – Located in northern Napa Valley, this town is known for its rustic charm, hot springs, and esteemed vineyards/wineries. Some well-known wine brands in this town are: Chateau Montelena, Castello di Amorosa, Sterling Vineyards, and more!
Wineries, Vineyards, or Cellars to Visit in Napa Valley & Sonoma:
There are also four other regions nestled within the 5 towns that make up Napa Valley. These are: Angwin, Lake Berryessa, Oakville, and Rutherford. Oakville in particular is home to some of the most renowned vineyards in Napa Valley such as Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, Opus One, and Promontory.
- V. Sattui Winery – V. Sattui is one of the most popular and loved wineries in Napa Valley. They host an amazing lobster festival every year in the spring, and they’re known for producing a broad variety of wines. They also have large Italian-style tasting room, beautiful picnic grounds and have beautiful amenities to host weddings.
- Castello di Amorosa – Just a few miles down the road, you will find one of my personal favorite wineries – Castello di Amorosa. This location contains a 13th-century styled Tuscan castle, breathtaking views, a nice variety of wines for different tasting preferences, and even a few farm animals.
- Brown Estate – If you’re looking to support black-owned wine makers during your trip to Napa Valley, be sure to visit Brown Estate. As of April 2024, they are the only Black-owned estate winery in Napa Valley. Their winery offers tastings by appointment in their downtown Napa tasting room.
- J Vineyards & Winery – If you love sparkling wines and a beautiful tasting room, I recommend taking a step into Sonoma County and visit J Vineyards and Winery. This location offers quality bubbly options, but my favorite bottle from our visit was the 2018 Canfield Pinot Noir. This wine was absolutely beautiful!
- Screaming Eagle – Screaming Eagle is the most exclusive winery in Napa Valley. There is currently a waitlist to visit here that is many years long, with bottles costing well over $2,000 USD. They are known to sell some of the most expensive wine in America due to the exceptional quality, limited quantity, and the types of grapes that are grown there. Tastings are currently not open to the public.
- Kendall Jackson – Now enjoying Kendall Jackson’s wine estate was not on my bingo card this year! Kendall Jackson is one of the most recognizable wine brands in the United States, located on a beautiful property in Sonoma. You can enjoy food and wine pairings here. My favorite bottle from our visit surprisingly their 2022 Sable Mountain Chardonnay (and I’m not even a huge fan of Chardonnay!).
Other notable cellars and tasting rooms I recommend exploring are: Stonemason Cellars and Tank Garage.
Popular Napa Valley Events and Festivals:
- V.Sattui Annual Lobster Festival – This is a fun, beautiful, members-only event that takes place each year at V.Sattui Winery. Enjoy live music, a DJ, fresh Maine lobster, large prawns, Italian sausage, corn on the cob, and multiple wine tastings under a large tent or throughout the beautiful grounds of this vineyard.
- Napa Valley Film Festival – If you love food, wine, and cinema, then the Napa Valley Film Festival (NVFF) is a must visit event. Each year around November, this festival features over 100 films across multiple wine venues, with accompanying food demonstrations.
- Napa Valley Truffle Festival – Each year in January, truffle lovers gather in Napa to enjoy unique experiences around the black winter truffle. Here you will meet world-renowned chefs, enjoy wine pairings, cooking demonstrations, truffle dinners, meet truffle artisans and more.

Tips for Planning Your Trip:
- Book in Advance – If you plan to visit Napa or Sonoma during peak season, be sure to book wine tastings and accommodations in advance.
- Pace Your Visit – Napa Valley and nearby Sonoma have over 800 total vineyards and wineries combined. As you plan your visit, I recommend pacing yourself, enjoying the beauty, and not visiting more than 2 or 3 wine locations per a day.
- Transportation – While in Napa, I recommend renting a car, booking a limo, or researching shuttle services ahead of time. Some wineries (not many) may offer shuttle services for their location.
- Bring Gifts – If you’re planning a girls trip to Napa Valley, be sure to checkout my guide for planning the ultimate girls vineyard day. To make this trip memorable, why not purchase a cute and creative gift for your wine lovers? Here are a few gift ideas:
