After testing multiple Kentucky Mule variations side by side, this version quickly became my go-to. I started with the classic combination of bourbon, lime juice, and ginger beer, then tested versions with lemon juice and with honey syrup in place of traditional simple syrup.

While each had its merits, the combination of bourbon, fresh lime juice, honey syrup, and ginger beer delivered the most balanced result! This Kentucky Mule recipe is smooth yet bold, with just enough sweetness to round out the ginger’s spice and highlight the bourbon’s natural warmth. This final recipe offers the best flavor, the cleanest finish, and the most consistently refreshing sip.

  • One of the easiest cocktails to make, even for your first time
  • A refreshing bourbon drink, especially for bourbon lovers
  • Perfect for warmer weather, happy hour, or large hosting events
  • A modern twist on a classic Moscow Mule cocktail that bourbon lovers adore

A Kentucky Mule drink is a bourbon-based twist on the Moscow Mule. Instead of traditional vodka, this Kentucky bourbon mule uses bourbon whiskey, creating unique flavors of bourbon that feel warmer, richer, and more robust.

  • Classic Moscow Mule: vodka, ginger beer, lime
  • Classic Kentucky Mule: bourbon, ginger beer, lime

The result is a heartier option with deeper caramel, vanilla, and oak notes. This Kentucky twist is especially loved by fans of bourbon cocktails who want something refreshing without sacrificing character. This recipe also differs from many standard versions by using honey syrup instead of simple syrup, giving a smoother mouthfeel and enhancing the best flavor of the bourbon.

Best Bourbon for a Kentucky Mule

Remember, all bourbons are whiskey, but not all whiskey are bourbons. If you use a Rye whiskey in this cocktail, it is called a Rye Mule or a Whiskey Mule. However, when you use Kentucky Bourbon, it is called a Kentucky Mule. So when making a Kentucky mule, you will want to look for a smooth bourbon (not whiskey) that will not overpower the drink. Below are a few favorites from our family:

Each brings something slightly different, but all work beautifully in this perfect cocktail.

These main ingredients will keep your mule simple yet flavorful:

  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey – warm, smooth base with bold Kentucky character
  • ½ oz fresh-squeezed lime juice – adds brightness and a crisp citrus note
  • ½ oz honey syrup – soft sweetness and balance (a better way than plain simple syrup)
  • 4 oz quality ginger beer – provides that signature spicy kick
  • Ice – for proper dilution and chilling
  • Lime wheel or lime wedge – garnish and fresh aroma
  • Fresh mint or mint sprig (optional but highly recommended) – nods to the mint julep and Kentucky’s horse racing tradition, and adds beautiful botanicals

Kentucky Mule Variations & Substitutions

Want to switch things up? Try these different variations:

  • Bourbon Mule with Lemon Juice: Swap lime for lemon juice for a brighter, smoother finish. Lime juice enhances the bite from our recipe testing, where lemon juice rounds out the cocktail for a smoother finish.
  • Irish Mule: Use Irish whiskey instead of bourbon
  • Non-Alcoholic Whiskey Mule: Use a non-alcoholic whiskey alternative
  • Ginger Syrup Mule: Replace ginger beer with ginger syrup and soda water
  • Seasonal Spin: Add fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme

The iconic copper mug isn’t just about looks. Copper keeps drinks colder longer and enhances the perception of carbonation, making mule cocktails feel extra crisp. While not required, a copper mule cup elevates the entire cocktail culture experience.

If you’re a fan of bourbon cocktails, you may also love the following recipes:

You can, but ginger ale is sweeter and milder. For the signature spicy kick, use quality ginger beer. If you use ginger ale in this recipe, omit the honey syrup.

They’re essentially the same. “Kentucky Mule” emphasizes the bourbon’s regional roots.

Mix the bourbon, lime juice, and honey syrup ahead. Add ginger beer just before serving.

A Kentucky Mule uses bourbon for a richer, slightly sweeter flavor, while a Tennessee Mule uses Tennessee whiskey, which is charcoal-filtered for a smoother, mellower finish.
