One evening while traveling through Brazil, a friendly local bartender gave me a personal introduction to a variety of cachaça spirits and taught me how to craft Brazil’s beloved national cocktail, the Caipirinha. This world-renowned drink quickly became my favorite during our time in Rio de Janeiro, with bold, citrusy flavors that are as vibrant and unforgettable as Brazilian culture itself. In this post, I will share the authentic Caipirinha recipe I learned firsthand in Brazil, along with helpful tips to help you recreate this refreshing cocktail just like they serve.

  • Inspired by my time in Brazil – I learned the traditional technique firsthand from a local bartender in Rio de Janeiro and used that experience to develop my version at home.
  • Only four main ingredients – All you need is cachaça, fresh lime, sugar, and ice to make this refreshing Brazilian cocktail.
  • Ready in about 5 minutes – Muddle, pour, stir, and serve. No cocktail shaker or complicated equipment is required.
  • Fresh and citrusy – Muddled lime and fresh lime juice balance the bold, slightly sweet and earthy flavor of the cachaça.
  • Easy to customize – Adjust the sugar to your taste or try one of the fruit variations I enjoyed seeing throughout Brazil.

Caipirinha is a classic Brazilian cocktail made with cachaça, fresh lime, sugar, and ice. Considered Brazil’s national cocktail, it’s known for its refreshing citrus flavor and the distinctive sweet, earthy notes of cachaça. The lime and sugar are traditionally muddled together to release the lime’s fresh juices and oils before the cachaça and ice are added. If you enjoy a mojito, you’ll probably love a Caipirinha. It has a similar fresh lime flavor, but without the mint or club soda.

Cachaça (pronounced kuh-SHAH-suh) is a Brazilian spirit made from fermented fresh sugarcane juice and is the traditional liquor used in a Caipirinha. While it is often compared to rum, cachaça is made directly from fresh sugarcane juice, giving it a distinctive fresh, slightly sweet, and earthy flavor.

When I learned how to make a Caipirinha in Brazil, the bartender recommended Santo Grau Cachaça, which is a great option for this cocktail. We also frequently saw Cachaça 51 (Pirassununga 51) served during our travels throughout Brazil. For the best Caipirinha, choose a good-quality cachaça that you enjoy, since its flavor is prominent in such a simple cocktail. Look for these brands at well-stocked liquor stores or specialty spirits shops.

You only need a few simple ingredients to make this refreshing Caipirinha cocktail. You can find the exact measurements in the printable recipe card below.

  • Cachaça – The signature Brazilian spirit that gives a Caipirinha its distinctive flavor.
  • Fresh limes – Cut into wedges and muddled with the sugar to release the fresh citrus juice and flavorful oils from the peel.
  • Fresh lime juice – Adds extra bright, tart citrus flavor and helps balance the cachaça.
  • Sugar – Sweetens the cocktail and balances the tartness of the fresh lime.
  • Ice – Chills the Caipirinha and slightly dilutes the cocktail as you stir.

Making a Caipirinha takes just a few minutes and can be done directly in the same glass you’re planning to serve the drink in! Detailed instructions can be found in the printable recipe card below:

step 1 photo showing cut limes being added to a mixing glass

STEP 1: Prepare the lime – Cut the lime into wedges and remove the white pith running through the center. This is a tip I learned from the bartender in Brazil to prevent the cocktail from tasting bitter.

step 2 photo showing limes and sugar being muddled together

STEP 2: Muddle the lime and sugar – Add the lime wedges and sugar to your glass. Gently muddle them together to release the lime juice and oils from the peel.

step 3 photo showing Cachaça being poured into the mixing glass with limes and sugar

STEP 3: Add the cachaça – Pour the cachaça and fresh lime juice over the muddled lime mixture.

step 4 showing ingredients being mixed together with a spoon

STEP 4: Add ice and stir – Fill the glass with ice and stir everything together until well chilled. Serve immediately with the muddled lime wedges in the glass.

Bartender’s Tip: When I learned to make Caipirinhas in Brazil, the bartender stirred the cocktail rather than shaking it. Stirring keeps the preparation simple and combines the muddled lime, sugar, and cachaça right in the serving glass.

Below you will find a few tips and tricks I picked up to make this traditional Brazilian cocktail

  • Remove the white pith – This is probably the most important tip. When preparing the lime wedges, cut away the white center to prevent it from adding bitterness to your cocktail.
  • Don’t over-muddle the lime – Press just enough to release the juice and oils. Overworking the peel can make the drink bitter.
  • Use fresh lime – Fresh lime wedges and freshly squeezed lime juice give the Caipirinha its bright, refreshing citrus flavor.
  • Adjust the sugar to taste – In Brazil, I saw Caipirinhas made with everything from sugar cubes to raw sugar. Start with the recipe amount and adjust depending on how sweet you like your cocktail.
  • Stir instead of shake – The bartender who taught me to make Caipirinhas in Brazil built and stirred the cocktail directly in the glass.
  • Serve immediately – Caipirinhas are best enjoyed freshly made while they’re cold and the lime is at its brightest.

While traveling through Brazil, we found plenty of fun twists on the classic Caipirinha using fresh tropical fruits. Here are a few variations you can try at home:

  • Passion Fruit Caipirinha: Add fresh passion fruit pulp for a sweet, tart, tropical flavor.
  • Strawberry Caipirinha: Muddle fresh strawberries with the lime and sugar for a fruity, slightly sweeter cocktail.
  • Kiwi Caipirinha: Muddle fresh kiwi with the lime for a bright, refreshing variation with a subtle sweetness.
  • Pineapple Caipirinha: Add muddled fresh pineapple for a juicy tropical twist that pairs beautifully with cachaça.

I recommending keeping the cachaça as the base spirit so you still get the signature flavor of a Caipirinha.

The bright, citrusy flavor of a Caipirinha pairs especially well with grilled, smoky, and savory foods. Here are a few of my favorite pairings:

A Caipirinha is traditionally built and stirred directly in the serving glass. When I learned to make one from a bartender in Brazil, he muddled the lime and sugar, added the cachaça and ice, then stirred everything together.

I recommend Santo Grau Cachaça, which is the brand the bartender recommended to me in Brazil. Cachaça 51 is another popular option that we frequently saw during our travels.

Yes. You can make a Caipirinha with different types of sugar, although the flavor and color may change slightly. In Brazil, I saw both sugar cubes and raw sugar used, so you can adjust the type and amount to your preference.

Caipirinhas are best made fresh because muddled lime can become bitter as it sits. For a party, you can prep your limes and other ingredients ahead of time, then muddle, mix, and add ice shortly before serving.

Both are refreshing lime cocktails, but a Caipirinha is made with cachaça, lime, and sugar, while a mojito is typically made with rum, lime, sugar, mint, and club soda.
