One evening while traveling through Brazil, a friendly local bartender gave me a personal introduction to a variety of cachaça spirits and taught me how to craft Brazil’s beloved national cocktail, the Caipirinha. This world-renowned drink quickly became my favorite during our time in Rio de Janeiro, with bold, citrusy flavors that are as vibrant and unforgettable as Brazilian culture itself. In this post, I will share the authentic Caipirinha recipe I learned firsthand in Brazil, along with helpful tips to help you recreate this refreshing cocktail just like they serve.

The Caipirinha is a simple yet refreshing recipe, that reminds me of the classic mojito, just without mint.

At the heart of the Caipirinha cocktail is cachaça, which is a Brazilian spirit distilled from fermented sugarcane juice. Cachaça cannot be substituted for any other liquor to make this recipe. It is the key ingredient that gives the Caipirinha its distinct character.

Cachaça has a slightly sweet flavor with earthy notes, which sets it apart from other spirits. During my Caipirinha cocktail lesson, the bartender recommended the Santo Grau brand of cachaça as shown below:

Another popular brand we frequently saw used during our travels was the Pirassununga Cachaça brand. The ingredients you will need to create a traditional Caipirinha recipe are cachaça liquor, fresh limes, sugar, and ice.

  • 1 Lime, sliced into wedges
  • 1.5 oz Lime Juice
  • 1.5 tbsp Sugar
  • 2.5 oz Cachaça

To prepare a Caipirinha, start by cutting a lime into wedges and placing them in a mixing glass or the cocktail glass you wish to serve. I learned in Brazil to always remove the white vein that’s found running down the center of the citrus fruit after cutting it. This part could make your drink taste bitter if it’s not removed.

I also learned that most Brazilians will either use 1-2 sugar cubes, while others would add a spoonful of raw sugar. So it seems the type of sugar and how much sugar that’s used is up to one’s preference. The bartender I met used 2 sugar cubes during my lesson. From there, he muddled the lime wedges and sugar cubes together, added two shots of cachaça, added ice, stirred, then served.

However, in the recipe I have below, I decided to incorporate a bit more sugar and fresh squeezed lime juice in addition to the lime wedges to balance the forwardness of the cachaça. Regardless of the method used, this cocktail should always be served chilled, with lime wedges and fresh ingredients.

As we ventured to different restaurants and towns in Brazil, we also discovered many variations of the Caipirinha. We saw flavors such as passion fruit, kiwi, strawberry and more!
