Hennessy Sidecar Recipe

This Hennessy Sidecar is a smooth, citrus-forward cocktail made with Hennessy Cognac, Cointreau, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and rich Demerara syrup. It’s an easy twist on the classic Sidecar, with warm caramel notes that beautifully complement the Cognac.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Hennessy Cognac
  • ½  ounce Orange Liqueur (I recommend Cointreau)
  • ½  ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
  • ½  ounce Demerara Syrup
  • ½  ounce Simple Syrup

Instructions

  • If desired, run a lemon wedge around half the rim of a chilled coupe glass. Optionally you can also dip it into sugar. Set aside and pull out your cocktail shaker.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add Hennessy Cognac, Cointreau, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and Demerara syrup.
  • Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds, or until the outside of the cocktail shaker is very cold.
  • Strain into the prepared coupe glass. Garnish with a lemon twist and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Orange Liqueur: Cointreau is my preferred orange liqueur for this recipe because its bright orange flavor balances the richness of the Hennessy without overpowering it. Grand Marnier can also be used for a richer flavor.
  • Fresh lemon juice: Use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the brightest, freshest flavor.
  • Demerara syrup: I highly recommend using homemade Demerara syrup. Its rich caramel and molasses-like notes are one of the things that makes this Hennessy Sidecar unique.
  • Adjusting sweetness: For a less-sweet cocktail, slightly reduce the simple syrup while keeping the Demerara syrup for its signature flavor.
  • Sugar rim: The sugared rim is optional. I prefer rimming only half of the coupe so you can enjoy the cocktail both with and without the additional sweetness.
  • Chill the glass: Place your coupe in the freezer for about 10–15 minutes before making the cocktail to help keep your Sidecar cold longer.
  • Pitcher option: To make a 60-ounce batch, combine 30 oz Hennessy with 7½ oz each Cointreau, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and Demerara syrup. This makes 15 cocktails before shaking with ice.
