This apple cider margarita recipe is one of my favorite cocktails to make every fall. As this recipe evolved over the years, a close family friend and I started experimenting with ways to elevate the classic combination of tequila, fresh apple cider, and lime, and we landed on a few special touches that made all the difference. My favorite is a splash of Cognac floated over the finished cocktail, which adds warmth and a richer flavor with every sip. I’ll show you exactly how to make it, including our signature Cognac float and an easy pitcher version for serving a crowd.

  • A unique Cognac float – This is totally optional, but instead of mixing the Cognac into the cocktail shaker, it can be poured over the finished margarita for a richer taste and warm aroma that complements the apple cider beautifully. If you do not have cognac, this recipe is wonderful as is.
  • Full of fall flavors – Fresh apple cider, cinnamon, tequila, and citrus come together for a fall margarita that’s crisp, refreshing, and filled with warm seasonal flavor.
  • Perfectly balanced –The fresh lime juice  in this recipe adds just enough acidity to balance the sweet apple cider, while the agave nectar is completely optional depending on the sweetness of your cider.
  • Quick and easy to make – This apple cider tequila cocktail comes together in about five minutes with a cocktail shaker and a handful of simple ingredients.
  • Easy to make for a crowd – This recipe shares how to make one cocktail for yourself or turn the recipe into an apple cider margarita pitcher when you’re entertaining. I’ll share the measurements for both below.

You only need a handful of margarita ingredients to make this easy fall cocktail. Detailed measurements can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Blanco tequila – I prefer blanco tequila because its clean, crisp flavor lets the apple cider and Cognac shine without overpowering them.
  • Grand Marnier – This orange liqueur adds citrus flavor with a little extra richness. Grand Marnier is my preference for this recipe, but you can use Cointreau or triple sec if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Fresh apple cider – Use fresh, unfiltered apple cider for the best apple flavor. Since the sweetness can vary depending on the cider you buy, give it a quick taste before deciding whether you need additional sweetener.
  • Fresh lime juice – Freshly squeezed lime juice gives this apple cider margarita the tartness it needs to balance the sweetness of the cider and orange liqueur.
  • Agave nectar – This is optional! I typically use up to ½ ounce, but you can add less or leave it out completely if your apple cider is already sweet enough.
  • Cognac (Optional) – This is the secret ingredient my brother and I love in this recipe. Instead of shaking it with the other ingredients, I add a ½-ounce Cognac float to the top of the prepared cocktail (We use D’USSÉ). It adds a warm, richer flavor that pairs beautifully with the apple and cinnamon.
  • Cinnamon, raw sugar, and salt – Combine these to make the rim of the glass. The cinnamon adds warmth, the raw sugar complements the sweet apple cider, and a little salt helps balance the sweetness.
  • Ice: You’ll need ice for both shaking the margarita and serving it. I recommend straining the cocktail over fresh ice rather than using the ice from your cocktail shaker.

Optional Garnishes

Finish your margarita with a fresh apple slice, cinnamon stick, or lime wheel. A sprig of fresh rosemary is another beautiful garnish if you want to add a little extra seasonal touch.

One of the things I love about this apple cider margarita recipe is how easily you can adjust it to suit your taste. Here are a few of my favorite substitutions and variations:

  • Try reposado tequila – Swap the blanco tequila for a good quality reposado tequila if you prefer a warmer, slightly richer flavor. Reposado’s subtle oak and vanilla notes pair especially well with apple cider.
  • Swap the orange liqueur – If you don’t have Grand Marnier, Cointreau or triple sec are both great options. You can keep the measurement the same.
  • Use maple syrup instead of agave – For even more fall flavor, replace the agave nectar with pure maple syrup. Start with a small amount and adjust to taste since your apple cider already provides plenty of natural sweetness.
  • Make it smoky – Replace some or all of the blanco tequila with mezcal for a smoky cider margarita. A smoking cinnamon stick makes a fun garnish for this variation, too.
  • Skip the Cognac float – You can leave out the Cognac for a lighter version. You’ll still have a delicious fall twist on a classic margarita with tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, and apple cider.
  • Change the rim – Instead of the cinnamon, raw sugar, and salt mixture, try cinnamon sugar for a sweeter rim or cinnamon and salt for something less sweet.

STEP 3: Shake the margarita –  Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds, or until the outside of the cocktail shaker feels very cold. From there, strain over fresh ice into a new glass.

STEP 4: Garnish and serve – Finish your apple cider margarita with a thin slice of apple, cinnamon stick, or lime wheel and serve immediately. Optionally, you can add the Cognac float. Slowly pour ½ ounce Cognac over the top of the margarita. Enjoy!

For a 58-ounce pitcher, this large-batch version makes approximately 8-10 cocktails, depending on how generously you pour each glass. The margarita base can be mixed and chilled ahead of time, but save the Cognac for serving so every cocktail gets that signature float.

Pitcher Ingredients

  • 2 cups (16 ounces) blanco tequila
  • 1 cup (8 ounces) Grand Marnier
  • 3 cups (24 ounces) fresh apple cider
  • ¾ cup (6 ounces) fresh lime juice
  • Up to ½ cup (4 ounces) agave nectar, optional and to taste
  • 4 ounces Cognac, for serving (½ ounce per cocktail)
  • Ice, for serving
  • Cinnamon, raw sugar, and salt, for the rims
  • Fresh apple slices, cinnamon sticks, or lime wheels, for garnish

Directions

STEP 1: Combine the margarita mixture – Pour the blanco tequila, Grand Marnier, fresh apple cider, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar into a large pitcher. Start with less agave, taste, and add more only if needed.

STEP 2: Stir and chill – Stir the margarita mixture thoroughly, then cover and refrigerate until cold. Give it another good stir immediately before serving.

STEP 3: Prepare the glasses – Combine cinnamon, raw sugar, and a pinch of salt on a small plate. Run a lime wedge around the outer edge of each glass, then dip it into the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Fill each rimmed glass with fresh ice.

STEP 4: Pour and Serve – Divide the chilled apple cider margarita mixture among the prepared glasses. Avoid adding ice directly to the pitcher, which can dilute the entire batch as it sits. Optionally add the Cognac float. Slowly pour ½ ounce Cognac over the top of each cocktail. Keep the Cognac out of the pitcher so it remains a distinct aromatic layer in each individual margarita. Garnish and enjoy!

Tips for Making the Best Margaritas

A few small details can make a big difference when making the best apple cider margarita. Here are my tips for getting the flavor, temperature, and Cognac float just right every time:

  • Use fresh, unfiltered apple cider – Fresh apple cider gives this cocktail a fuller apple flavor than filtered apple juice. If possible, look for unfiltered cider in the refrigerated section of your grocery store.
  • Taste your cider before adding agave – Some apple ciders are much sweeter than others. Make the margarita mixture first, give it a taste, and only add as much agave nectar as you need.
  • Always use fresh lime juice – Fresh lime juice provides the bright acidity that keeps the apple cider margarita from tasting overly sweet. I don’t recommend substituting bottled lime juice here.
  • Shake it well – Give your cocktail shaker a vigorous 15–20 second shake. This doesn’t just chill the margarita, it also provides a small amount of dilution that helps all of the flavors come together.
  • Use fresh ice for serving – Don’t pour the ice from your cocktail shaker into your glass. Straining the margarita over fresh ice keeps it colder longer and gives you better control over dilution.
  • Rim only the outside of the glass – Use your lime wedge to moisten the outer edge before dipping it into the cinnamon, raw sugar, and salt mixture. This keeps excess cinnamon and salt from falling into the cocktail and changing its flavor.
  • Add the Cognac last – The Cognac should always go on after the margarita has been poured. Slowly pour it over the back of a spoon to help it stay near the top instead of immediately mixing into the drink.

If you love this apple cider margarita, here are a few more margarita recipes to mix up next:

This apple cider margarita is easy to prepare ahead of time, especially when you’re making a large batch for a crowd.

  • Make ahead – Combine the tequila, Grand Marnier, fresh apple cider, lime juice, and agave in your pitcher, then cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve. For the freshest citrus flavor, I recommend making the mixture no more than 24 hours in advance.
  • Wait to add ice – Don’t add ice to the pitcher before refrigerating it. As the ice melts, it will dilute the margarita mixture. Instead, pour the chilled cocktail over fresh ice when you’re ready to serve.
  • Add the Cognac at serving time – Keep the Cognac separate from the margarita mixture and add the ½-ounce float to each individual glass just before serving. This preserves the aromatic layer that makes this cocktail special.
  • Store leftovers – Transfer any leftover margarita mixture to an airtight jar or container and refrigerate. For the best flavor, enjoy it within 1-2 days and give it a good stir or shake before serving again.
  • Don’t store a finished margarita – If possible, store only the undiluted margarita mixture. A cocktail that’s already been poured over ice will become watered down as it sits.

You can, but I recommend fresh apple cider whenever possible. Apple cider is typically less filtered and has a fuller, more robust apple flavor that works especially well in this fall cocktail. If you substitute apple juice, you may want to reduce or completely omit the agave since apple juice can be quite sweet.

The Cognac float is one of my favorite parts of this recipe! Adding it after the margarita has been poured keeps more of its aroma and flavor concentrated near the top of the cocktail. You'll notice those warm, rich notes as you take your first few sips before the Cognac gradually mixes into the margarita.

Yes. For a large batch, combine the tequila, Grand Marnier, apple cider, fresh lime juice, and agave in your pitcher and refrigerate until you're ready to serve. Wait to add ice and the ½-ounce Cognac float to each individual glass until serving so the margaritas aren't diluted and you don't lose the effect of the float.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Blanco Tequila
  • 1 ounce Orange Liqueur , (I used Grand Marnier)
  • 3 ounces Fresh Apple Cider
  • ¾  ounce Fresh Lime Juice
  • ½ ounce Agave, (optional, depending on how sweet your cider is)
  • Ice
  • ½ ounce Cognac Float, (optional)

Instructions

  • On a small plate, combine cinnamon, raw sugar, and a pinch of salt. Run a lime wedge around the outer edge of the glass, then gently dip the rim into the cinnamon-sugar mixture until evenly coated.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add 2 ounces blanco tequila, 1 ounce Grand Marnier, 3 ounces fresh apple cider, ¾ ounce fresh lime juice, and up to ½ ounce agave nectar.
  • Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds, or until the outside of the cocktail shaker feels very cold.
  • Fill your prepared glass with fresh ice, then strain the margarita mixture into the glass. Using fresh ice keeps the finished cocktail cold without adding the partially melted ice from the shaker.
  • OPTIONAL: Slowly pour ½ ounce Cognac over the top of the margarita. For a more defined float, gently pour the Cognac over the back of a spoon held just above the surface of the drink. Don't stir, the Cognac is meant to remain near the top, giving you its warm aroma and richer flavor as you sip.
  • Finish your apple cider margarita with a thin slice of apple, cinnamon stick, or lime wheel and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Apple cider: For the best flavor, use fresh, unfiltered apple cider. Since cider varies in sweetness, taste your cocktail before adding the optional agave.
  • Tequila: Blanco tequila gives the cocktail a crisp, clean flavor. Reposado can be substituted for a warmer, richer margarita.
  • Orange liqueur: I prefer Grand Marnier, but Cointreau or triple sec can be substituted using the same amount.
  • Cognac float: This is optional, but you can add the Cognac on top after pouring the margarita rather than shaking it with the other ingredients. Slowly pour it over the back of a spoon to help it remain near the top of the cocktail.
  • Fresh lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice is recommended for the best flavor and balance.
  • Rim: Combine cinnamon, raw sugar, and a small pinch of salt for the rim. Rim only the outside edge of the glass to prevent excess seasoning from falling into the drink.
  • Make ahead: The margarita base can be mixed and refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Add ice and the Cognac float just before serving.
  • Pitcher Version: For 8 servings, combine 16 ounces tequila, 8 ounces Grand Marnier, 24 ounces apple cider, 6 ounces lime juice, and up to 4 ounces agave. Add ½ ounce Cognac to each individual glass when serving.
