This guacamole recipe is one of my all-time favorites, inspired by cooking classes and travels throughout Mexico where I learned to appreciate the simplicity of fresh ingredients. Over time, I added my own Southern spin, using garlic salt as a shortcut for deeper, savory flavor without extra garlic prep. The result? A homemade guacamole that’s creamy, vibrant, and always a crowd-pleasing appetizer for taco nights, girls’ nights, or anytime you need something fresh and delicious.

How to Choose the Right Avocado
The first step to the best guacamole recipe is choosing the best avocados! The secret starts with perfectly ripe avocados. Below are a few tips I’ve learned over the years to identify perfectly ripe avocados:
- When shopping slightly press each avocado. They should yield slightly, but not be mushy
- Select avocados that have a darker green, almost black skin
- The most ripe avocados should feel soft but still firm
- If you have an under-ripe avocado, place it in a paper bag at room temperature for 1-2 days to speed up the ripening process.

Ingredients
- Ripe avocados – The creamy base of your guacamole, providing rich texture and healthy fats
- Small red onion, diced – Adds a sharp, slightly sweet crunch
- Roma tomatoes, pitted & diced – Brings freshness and a juicy balance
- Jalapeño or Serrano pepper, finely diced (seeds removed) – Adds a mild to medium heat
- Cilantro, chopped – Gives that classic bright, herbaceous flavor
- 1 lime, juiced – Essential acidity that enhances flavor and keeps the guacamole green
- Cumin – Adds warmth and a subtle smoky depth
- Garlic salt – My secret ingredient for savory richness without extra prep of dicing garlic
- Salt – Enhances all the flavors
- Ground red pepper – Adds a gentle kick

How to Make Guacamole
This guacamole comes together in just four easy steps:

STEP 1: Chop your ingredients – Wash and finely chop the red onion, tomatoes, a jalapeño or serrano pepper, and cilantro. Set these ingredients aside.

STEP 2: Prepare the avocados – Cut and remove the avocado flesh from the shell. Save one seed and set it aside. Place the avocados in a large mixing bowl or molcajete.

STEP 3: Season the avocados – Season avocados with garlic salt, cumin, lime juice, salt, and ground red pepper. Then mash the avocados to your desired consistency (chunky or smooth). Taste the avocado mixture to ensure the desired flavors are there. This is the best way to build flavor from the start.

STEP 4: Fold in the fresh ingredients – Gently fold in the chopped veggies. Stir, taste, and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve immediately with tortilla chips. Enjoy!
Tips for Making Guacamole
- Always season your avocado base first for deeper flavor. This method will help you avoid a bland tasting guacamole.
- Use fresh lime juice to brighten the taste and slow browning process. Lime juice actually helps to prolong the life of guacamole.
- Use Saran Wrap or plastic cling wrap to preserve the longevity of the guacamole and to prevent browning. Be sure to place the plastic wrap directly on top of the guacamole surface.
- Adjust heat level by adding more or less jalapeño or serrano peppers. You can also leave the seeds in if you like more heat.

How to Store and Preserve Guacamole
To keep your leftover guacamole fresh:
- Place it in an airtight container
- Add the avocado seed into the center
- Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface (this is key!)
- Store in the refrigerator
These steps will help prevent oxidation and keeps your guacamole green longer.
