There’s something special about making homemade honey BBQ sauce from scratch. I’ve been making this recipe for years because it has the perfect balance of sweet, smoky, and tangy flavors without relying on artificial ingredients or preservatives. It’s one of my favorite sauces to brush over grilled chicken kabobs, chicken wings, barbecue ribs, and so much more. I also love pouring it into mason jars to share with friends as a thoughtful homemade gift. Once you learn how to make honey BBQ sauce yourself, you’ll never want to go back to the bottled version!

Below you will find my full ingredients list for homemade bbq sauce. Detailed measurements can be found in the recipe card below:

  • Ketchup – Creates the rich tomato base and gives the sauce its classic barbecue flavor.
  • Honey – Adds natural sweetness while creating that signature honey BBQ sauce flavor.
  • Brown Sugar – Deepens the sweetness with rich caramel notes.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – Brightens the sauce with tangy acidity that balances the sweetness.
  • Molasses – Adds bold, old-fashioned barbecue flavor along with beautiful color.
  • Liquid Smoke – Gives the sauce authentic wood-smoked flavor and natural hickory smoke without needing a smoker.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – Adds savory flavor depth that makes the sauce taste more complex.
  • Onion Powder – Brings mild onion flavor throughout the sauce.
  • Garlic Powder – Adds warm savory notes that complement the sweetness.
  • Chili Powder – Contributes gentle warmth and layers of flavor without making the sauce spicy.
  • Celery Salt – Enhances all the flavors while adding subtle herbal notes.
  • Mustard Powder – Made from mustard seed, this provides a mild tanginess that rounds out the sweetness.

STEP 2: Simmer, Cool, & Store – Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Cook for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly. Remove from the heat and allow the sauce to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container or glass jar. Refrigerate until ready to use. Enjoy!

  • Add a few teaspoons of your favorite hot sauce for a spicy honey BBQ sauce.
  • Stir in smoked paprika for an even deeper smoky flavor.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for extra heat.
  • Substitute maple syrup for part of the honey for a slightly different sweetness.
  • Mix in Dijon or yellow mustard for extra tanginess.
  • Add fresh minced garlic instead of garlic powder for a bolder garlic flavor.
  • Stir in a splash of bourbon for an adult-friendly barbecue sauce.
  • Add crushed red pepper flakes for a little kick.

Honey BBQ Sauce Cooking Tips

  • Simmer gently rather than boiling to keep the honey from scorching.
  • Stir occasionally to prevent the sugars from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  • The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
  • Taste before serving and adjust with additional honey if you’d like it sweeter or vinegar if you’d like it tangier.
  • Brush onto grilled meats during the final few minutes of cooking to help prevent burning from the sugars.

  • Refrigerator: Store cooled honey BBQ sauce in an airtight container or glass mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • Freezer: For longer storage, freeze portions in ice cube trays before transferring them to freezer-safe bags. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before using.
  • Make Ahead: Since the flavors continue to develop overnight, this is an excellent make-ahead recipe for cookouts, parties, and meal prep.

No. This recipe is mild with just a little warmth from the chili powder. You can easily make it spicy by adding cayenne pepper or hot sauce.

Yes! This makes an excellent honey BBQ wing sauce for baked, grilled, or air-fried chicken wings.

You can, but you'll need to thin it with water and increase the sweeteners and seasonings since ketchup already contains sugar and vinegar.
