There is something timeless about a classic Mint Julep recipe, especially during Derby season. I first fell in love with this cocktail while attending a Kentucky Derby party hosted by one of my friends, and after testing countless versions at home, I realized the secret to a well-made mint julep is using an easy homemade mint simple syrup instead of aggressively muddling fresh mint leaves. The result is a smoother, fresher cocktail with balanced mint flavor and none of the bitterness that can sometimes overpower bourbon cocktails.

A mint julep cocktail is a classic Southern bourbon drink traditionally made with Kentucky bourbon, mint, sugar, and crushed ice. Known as the official drink of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, this refreshing cocktail has roots dating back to the 18th century and became especially popular throughout Kentucky during warm weather months. This cocktail is traditionally served in a silver julep cup or stainless steel mint julep mug, the drink is known for its frosty exterior, refreshing mint aroma, and strong bourbon-forward flavor.

Stainless Steel Mint Julep Mugs with Straws:

If you’re thinking of hosting your own Kentucky Derby Party, or would just like a great set of mint julep cups to add to your collection, I recommend ordering these off of Amazon:

The best bourbon for a mint julep is one that is smooth, slightly sweet, and easy to sip over lots of ice. Since this cocktail is spirit-forward, the flavor of the bourbon truly shines. A Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey with notes of caramel, vanilla, or oak pairs beautifully with fresh mint and homemade simple syrup.

This classic cocktail recipe comes together with just a few simple ingredients:

  • Kentucky Bourbon – The heart of the cocktail. Bourbon adds warmth, caramel notes, vanilla flavor, and that signature Southern richness that makes a mint julep so iconic.
  • Mint Simple Syrup – Mint syrup provides balanced sweetness while gently infusing the drink with fresh mint flavor without the bitterness that sometimes comes from muddling mint leaves.
  • Crushed Ice – Crushed ice is essential for creating the signature frosty texture and slowly diluting the bourbon as you sip.
  • Fresh Mint Sprigs – Fresh mint sprigs garnish the cocktail while adding aroma through the mint’s essential oils.

You can make this cocktail quickly and easily in just four easy steps:

step 1 photo of adding ice

STEP 1: Add Ice – Fill a mint julep cup, silver cup, rocks glass, or metal cup halfway with crushed ice.

step 2 photo of adding bourbon

STEP 2: Add Bourbon & Mint Syrup – Pour in the Kentucky bourbon and mint simple syrup.

step 3 photo showing the Mint Julep being stirred with a cocktail spoon

STEP 3: Stir – Stir for 15-20 seconds until the outside of the cup becomes frosty.

step 4 photo showing the Mint Julep being garnished with a mint sprig

STEP 4: Add More Ice & Garnish – Add more crushed ice, mounding it slightly over the top. Garnish with mint and enjoy!

Bartending Pro Tip: Before garnishing, gently clap the mint between your hands. This releases the mint’s essential oils and creates that signature julep aroma without bruising the mint leaf or creating bitterness.

  • Use brown sugar in the mint syrup for deeper caramel notes that pair beautifully with bourbon.
  • Add a small strip of lemon zest for brightness.
  • Swap bourbon for rye whiskey for a spicier flavor profile.
  • Use a highball glass or rocks glass if you do not own a traditional mint julep mug.
  • Add a splash of sparkling water for a lighter cocktail variation.

Many classic mint julep recipes call for muddling fresh mint leaves in the bottom of the cup with sugar. While this method can work, over-muddling often releases bitter flavors from the mint leaf, and can lead to inconsistent results when making.  However, if you opt to use a mint syrup instead, this creates a smoother and more balanced cocktail while still delivering that fresh mint flavor people love in a Kentucky Derby mint julep. It also makes entertaining much easier when hosting a crowd.

Tips for Making Mint Juleps for a Crowd

Hosting a party and want to serve these to a large crowd? Prepare the mint syrup ahead of time and create a simple DIY julep station for guests. Not only is this a fun activity, it also allows guests to adjust ingredient ratios to their liking, and makes hosting far less stressful. To create a DIY Mint Julep Station, you can simply set out:

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Kentucky Bourbon
  • ½ oz Mint Simple Syrup
  • Crushed Ice
  • Fresh Mint Sprigs

Instructions

  • Fill a mint julep cup or rocks glass halfway with crushed ice. Pour in the bourbon and mint simple syrup, then stir for 15-20 seconds until the outside of the glass becomes frosty.
  • Top with additional crushed ice, mounding slightly above the rim. Clap a mint sprig to awaken the oils, then garnish the julep with the fresh mint sprig and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Smooth Cocktail Tip: For the smoothest mint julep, use mint simple syrup instead of muddling fresh mint leaves. This helps prevent bitterness while evenly distributing mint flavor throughout the cocktail.
  • Awaken Mint: Gently clap the mint sprig between your hands before garnishing to release the mint’s essential oils and aroma.
  • Ice Tip: Crushed ice is key for achieving the signature frosty texture and slowly diluting the bourbon as you sip.
  • Serving Cup: Traditional mint juleps are served in a silver julep cup or stainless steel mint julep mug, but a rocks glass also works well.
  • Richer Flavor: For a richer flavor profile, try making the mint syrup with brown sugar instead of white sugar.
